Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ciprofloxacin on a wide range of bacteria and the effects of ciprofloxacin on the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria were cultured in the presence and absence of ciprofloxacin for 4 days and then analysed by biochemical and histopathological assays. The results showed that ciprofloxacin did not affect the growth of bacteria or Gram-negative bacteria. On the other hand, ciprofloxacin treatment did not affect the growth of Gram-positive bacteria or the growth of Gram-negative bacteria. However, ciprofloxacin treatment did not alter the growth of Gram-positive bacteria.

Introduction

Bacteria have the ability to reproduce in the absence of a pathogen. The number of bacteria that have developed into a gram-positive and a Gram-negative bacterium is higher than that of Gram-negative bacteria (, ). A variety of bacteria have been isolated from human and animal samples. However, they are usually found in the order Cipro, Enterobacteriaceae (E. faecalis) and Pseudomonas. Ciprofloxacin has been used to inhibit the growth of these bacteria. However, it is well known that the use of ciprofloxacin in humans and animals may cause various effects including the development of infection (, ), the formation of pseudomembranous lesions (, ), the spread of the infection (–),, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (–), and the formation of pseudomembranous lesions (, ). Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial that works by killing bacteria and improving bacterial survival. Ciprofloxacin has a narrow therapeutic window. It has the disadvantage of being more toxic than some other fluoroquinolones, such as ampicillin and tetracycline. Although ciprofloxacin is a potent fluoroquinolone, the use of it is not contraindicated.

Ciprofloxacin is a quinolone antimicrobial that has been used in the treatment of many bacterial infections. In addition to the usual antibacterial activity, ciprofloxacin has an advantage over other fluoroquinolones because it has a higher oral bioavailability and a more favorable pharmacokinetic profile (, ). It is effective against many Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa (–), C. difficile (CD) and Haemophilus influenzae (–). However, it has a lower oral bioavailability and may cause more severe side effects (–). To address these concerns and to increase the use of ciprofloxacin in the treatment of infections, a number of studies have been carried out in the literature (–, ).

Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ciprofloxacin on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Materials and Methods

A total of 80 Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and a total of 70 Gram-negative bacteria were cultured in the presence of ciprofloxacin for 4 days and then analysed by biochemical and histopathological assays. The bacteria were then examined by biochemical assays and immunological assays.

Animals and Treatment

Thirty-five healthy male Wistar rats (180–230 g) were used in this study. Rats were housed in cages with a 12-hour light exposure schedule. All animal experiments were carried out in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals of the National Institutes of Health (NIGLS) and the guidelines of the National Institute of Health (NIH) (NIAID) guidelines. All procedures were approved by the National Institutes of Health Research Ethics Committee (NIAID-N08).

Twenty-six rats (mean weight, 190 g) were used for the study. Each rat was weighed and weighed every 4 weeks. The rats were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: control, ciprofloxacin, ciprofloxacin + ciprofloxacin (control), ciprofloxacin + ciprofloxacin + piperacillin (piperacillin), piperacillin (piperacillin), ciprofloxacin + ciprofloxacin + piperacillin (control piperacillin).
